Live MusicPosted Friday, June 03rd, 2011
Hi there, I am a locally based musician and am simply wondering how I would go about securing a gig at The Thomas Tripp in Lymington. I have a lot of friends/family from the area who have been asking when I will be playing there as it's the biggest music venue in Lymington. If anyone knows who I would need to speak to let me know! Thanks. L. www.lucasraye.com

Live Music Posted Sunday, March 06th, 2011
Dear Sir/Madam, The Jon Walsh Blues Band is available to perform at blues and jazz festivals, blues clubs and venues in 2011. I have provided a brief profile of JWBB below. If you are interested in having The JWBB appear at your venue/festival please drop us a line via email or call me (Jon) on 07818 001587. Introducing: The JON WALSH BLUES BAND The Jon Walsh Blues Band is a real blues band! Not a blues-rock band, not a rock band disguised as blues band nor are we a blues band that plays other styles such as funk or soul although we may branch out into the odd jazzier number. Saying that, don’t think that we only play the “crying in your beer” kind of blues because we can boogie (and do we boogie!!!) along with the very best! Nevertheless, this band can conjure up all the different colours and moods of the blues – it rocks, stomps, swings, boogies, howls, cries and weeps! Some Quotes about JWBB Here are some quotes that Festival and Blues Club organisers have kindly said about us: “Jon plays the blues. No, I mean he really plays the blues!” ..... “This is one of the best genuine blues bands I have seen in a very long time.” .... “Outstanding! Not to be missed!” ...... Bruce Mason (Landlord/owner) The Cross Keys, Great Bedwyn. “Jon Walsh is a guitarist who can turn on the angst or wind up the boogie with equal aplomb.”...... “a top notch band who are currently at the top of their game!” ……… Reading Arts Centre (Thirdsday Blues Club). “This band has got it right, fantastic blues and a great presence on stage, a must see!” ……… Basingstoke Blues Club.. “What a great pleasure to have this wonderful band for the final main gig of the weekend!” ...... “….you'll love the Jon Walsh Blues Band!” ……… Swanage Blues Festival (March 2007). “Jon Walsh, brilliant! Just got back home from the weekend (Swanage Blues Festival 2007) and his CD is on its second play. Where has this band been hiding?” ……… Michael Pile (Blues fan at Swanage Blues Festival 2007) “Really enjoyed their set at Bentworth Blues Festival, one of the best I’ve heard in ages, amazing stuff! Made the mistake of not buying the CD at the time. How can I get a copy?” ….. Michael Hannan (blues fan at The Bentworth Blues Festival 2007) “This excellent blues band conjures up all the different colours and moods of real blues – their sound rocks, stomps, swings, boogies, howls, cries and weep! … Brilliant!” …. The Burnley National Blues Festival 2010 “Stupendous!" …. Swanage Blues Club, 2010 ... There are lots more but not all in one email - eh! What have we done- where have we been? ... JWBB released our first live album in mid 2005 and from then on the band really took flight. We ceased to be a “local” band and quickly became a major force on the South’s Blues Scene. Now The JWBB is a regular name on blues festival line ups such as Lakeside Summer Festival (courtesy Boogaloo Promotions), Sugar Hill Blues Festival (2006 -courtesy Boogaloo Promotions), St Ives September Festival (8 years running), Swanage Blues Festival (4 years running), Bentworth Blues Festival (4 years running), Marlborough International Jazz Festival(2008), Burnley National Blues Festival 2010 and we also appear at well-known blues venues, blues clubs and Arts Centres around the UK. We have toured in the UK and Europe and will touring again in 2011 (France & Switzerland) We are very proud to have tracks included on The Basingstoke Blues Club "Very Best of" Compilation Album ("Two Trains" - Jon Walsh) and on The Reading Arts Centre's “Thurdsday Blues Club” Compilation Album ("Balling The Jack" - Jon Walsh). Our next album will be released in later in 2011. Styles: The JWBB prides itself on playing a wide variety of the blues from slide guitar of the Mississippi Delta to the boogies of Texas and the jazz blues of Chicago. Artists covered include: Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Tampa Red, Freddie King, Albert King, BB King, Robert Johnson, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Bobby Bland, John Lee Hooker, Mississippi John Hurt, Blind Willie McTell, Son House, Willie Dixon, Jimmy Reed, Elmore James, Blind Willie Johnson, Rory Gallagher, Albert Collins, Otis Rush and many more. Not only that but much of the set consists of original material penned by Jon himself. The JWBB Line Up: Slidin’ Jon Walsh....…… Vocals, electric & acoustic guitars, slide guitar, harp Terry Michael ..…………. Drums & percussion Steve Voice ...…..………. Bass, vocals And sometimes with ... Peter "Mojo" Miller ……. Keyboards, vocals Keith Rowley .…..………. Sax, harp, guitar, vocals All JWBB’s sound equipment (including backline) is excellent and PAT certified. Support Act We can arrange for a support act to accompany us if required. Solo Acoustic Blues Jon also performs as a solo artist playing classic blues and original songs on acoustic and slide (dobro) guitars. A good act for small venues, wine bars and blues clubs etc... Contact Details Tel: 07818 001587 Email: jonwalsh_bluesband@hotmail.com Regards, Jon Walsh

Live MusicPosted Friday, April 02nd, 2010
Hi Graham Just to tell you about Sophie Rhodes, a local singer who used to play regularly at The Tripp between 2002 and 2006 as acoustic duo 'Indian Summer'. She has now re-formed her duo as Sophie Rhodes and is accompanied by her new guitarist Martin who plays both acoustic and electric guitar and does backing vocals. If you speak to Jonny Lovell, he will remember Sophie and I am sure will recommend her. You would be guaranteed first class live music with songs from the 60's to present day. If you are interested in booking please check out Facebook: Sophie Louise Rhodes Professional Singer/Vocal Coach and original songs and venues played are on www.myspace.com/indiansummeracousticduo I hope to hear from you by email on jrev05@yahoo.co.uk or on 01425 274767. Answers to many a question..Posted Thursday, March 26th, 2009
First of all guys... great to see some good feedback...we all endevour to make as many peoples nights as fun and memorable as possible! Firstly, Magenta are a brilliant rock covers band. Also afterwards, we have the very talented Fireman Sam playing who is accompanied by two brilliant drummers performing live to his awesome tunes! It really is a great sound! Secondly, Late and Live IS over 21s at the weekends and there are no exceptions guys. However during the week and depending on the gig we are usually over 18s, with a few over 16s thrown in for good measure! Lastly... just to let everyone know, we have the two most popular bands booked back... SPACE RITUAL (ex-members of HAWKWIND)(13th June) SHAM 69 -(July 18th) DO NOT MISS OUT! Thanks again guys for all your support and always making my job a very fun one! See you all soon Amy xxx

Re: BeatlesPosted Tuesday, December 30th, 2008
Hi Tina. Personally, I think people may have peaked on Beatles tribute bands and so it’s probably a good time to have a break from them. However, Big Just & I have some fun stuff planned for the summer, so watch out for some Beatles action then.

Kounterfeit KinksPosted Monday, December 22nd, 2008
Cheers to everyone who came down and made The Kounterfeit Kinks such a great night last Saturday. I had hopes that they would be a good band when I booked them, but they exceeded all expectations. I talked to the band afterwards and they were knocked out with the reception they got. Big Just & I are planning to bring the band back next summer, as part of a special series of Saturday night events, so keep an eye out for them. Cheers to Christian for a sterling job with the sound-mix. Happy Christmas To All. The Bishop.

AtmospherePosted Sunday, November 16th, 2008
Another great evening of Rock music from Stray & PV. Nice to see a good crowd there. Here is the "But". Why o why was there disco lights, and Motown music playing before the gig started, and in the interval, as much as i like Motown, not really appropriate for a Rock gig... Come on Tripp, get a gripp. Would love to see Stray & PV at the Tripp again if possible. Cheers.

I know all the messages are mainly about the music, which is great! However I wanted to say a big shout to the Thomas Tripp pub and their excellent food! We live in Staffordshire and travel down to eat and drink in the Tripp roughly every few months! We love it! Our family and friends have now started travelling down once or twice a year just to eat in the Tripp and they all love it too! SO GREAT STUFF! WE LOVE YOUR PUB! LONG MAY IT REIGN!!!

email from hotter than hellPosted Wednesday, August 06th, 2008
Dear Simon, I would like to wish you a big 'Thank-You' to you for the Gig of Saturday 2nd August at Thomas Tripp in Christchurch. The only problem we had was the Sound Spec, but we had a great night. The Sound Engineer was a real nice guy, but i dont think he knew what to do with our exact Sound Specification? I think the PA might not have been powerful enough for the Kiss related (Heavy/Hard Rock) Sound? Peavy are a good Guitar Amplifier, but not a PA System, as their Frequenceys can sound different. (Please dont shout at me for saying that & its just Sound Jargon. lol!). Seriously, on behalf of my Band Members and our Management, i would like to thank alot your great staff for their sincere hospitality and kindness to us. We honestly really couldnt ask for much more.... It was a great Turn Out and alot of people have been Emailing us and asking when 'Hotter Than Hell' will be coming back to Christchurch. Please see below, a guy who was a Founder of the first UK Kiss Fanzine, who attended our show via our Myspace: Hi Guys, Was at your gig in Christchurch last night, the only person with a Kiss T Shirt I think (standing in front of Gene and singing every song all night!) YOU ROCKED!!!! I had an awesome time - I've seen Kiss seven times, but I enjoyed myself just as much last night:-) It was great to be in the front row, something that is very difficult to achieve at an actual Kiss show. I have been a Kiss fan for thirty years this year and used to run the Kiss UK Attack fanzine back in the early nineties. Really hope you can come back again next tour (and that the lack of rock fans in the audience didn't put you off, at least it got busy-very busy!!!), my wife was very disappointed that she couldn't come due to sickness. MANY THANKS AGAIN - See you next time.... Your Bournemouth Rock City Fans- Ragnar Thank you again Simon for having us and hope to speak to you soon for a 2009 date? THOUGHT YOU MAY LIKE TO READ THIS EMAIL I RECEIVED. REGARDS SIMON

Hello, Just wanted to say what a great time I had at the Kiss Tribute gig on Saturday night. I really hope you can get them back again in the future. I’ve seen Kiss seven times, so know their show well and Hotter Than Hell did a superb job. On the subject of Rainbow, I found this great looking and sounding tribute band while searching on the net. http://www.rainbowrising.net/ I’m sure they could pull in quite a few rock fans too. Would be good to see them at Late & Live if you could sort something out. Anyway, cheers for now. See you next time.

Re: Hotter than hellPosted Tuesday, August 05th, 2008
Ok guys, hit a nerve here have i? Ray thinks I don't know the difference between a good and bad sound? Well best sound around here is at The Joiners in Southampton, so if I were you I would try a night out there. I said many people i spoke to, not all thought there were issues with the sound. So both of you can put your toys back in the pram now. Yes Ray you, as i are entitled to our opinions. I just felt that it was not as good as it could have been. Who knows' maybe the band had an off night? After all they had to deal with idiots jumping on the stage too! Love, Tattie.
- Tattie

Hotter than hellPosted Tuesday, August 05th, 2008
Right, first things first. It seems the soundman is getting bad press from 1 persons opinion who deemed it necessary to speak on behalf of everyone there, well cheers tattie. I was there and disagree totally. The sound was absolutely fine, maybe some trouble at the start but overall was good as always at this venue. The only place that has better sound than here is kyps and thats down to hardware not engineer. Maybe you should go to the gander to check out bad sound just so you know the difference!
- Ray P

Re: Hotter Than HellPosted Monday, August 04th, 2008
As the sound engineer for the Thomas Tripp I felt I should respond to the message posted by 'Tattie' regarding his/ her experience on the Kiss Tribute night. I do wholeheatredly strive to ensure that both the sound out front and on stage meets the requirements of both the audience and musicians. Throughout the night I was liasing with the Kiss technician to ensure that the musicians were satisfied.Initially the band did requiure more vocal foldback and i rectified this to the best of my ability.I am not always behind the desk because I like to listen to the sound from all listening perspectives throughout the entire venue to ensure a good balance as there is noticable variances in the acoustics.I do honestly try and obtain as much feedback as possibly on the subject of the sound on every gig that I do. I found that the general consensus of people were genuinely happy with the night. I fully appreciate your feedback about what you considered to be a sub-standard sound quality. However, I also think you should recognise that it is solely your opinion and I don't think you have the right to speak on behalf of all the people who regularly enjoy music at the venue. As a venue we have had many compliments about the standards of entertainment we provide, nearly all the bands we put on freely compliment us on the sound quality and some have even cited us for making them sound the best they ever have! In conclusion I would like to thank 'Tattie' for his/ her comment and I will take it into consideration as my main aim is to make sure that everyone has a great night out at our events. Ps. If you are going to leave feedback please don't write non-specific comments such '...the sound was crap' as this totally undermines the point you're trying to make.
- Christian James

Hotter Than Hell?Posted Sunday, August 03rd, 2008
Soap box time i'm afraid. Just witnessed The Kiss Tribute and i have to say firstly, Voodoo Vegas were cool although the sound was crap. Secondly i felt really sorry for the Kiss tribute. They too were plagued with sound difficulties all evening, and obviously had very little coming from the foldback. Credit to them tho' they stuck with it and tried their best. When the guitarist (Ace) tried to get the engineer's attention, turns out the engineer was not there, no-one at the desk! And not for the first time either. Also During Black Diamond the drummer (Peter) sings lead vocal. There was a bit of a problem here as his Microphone was off for at least half the song!! I have to ask, why is the sound balance always so bad in this venue? I have seen many bands here and there are always sound issues, This is not good practise. Try and sort it out guys or you will lose paying punters. Also admittedly the band were late on stage but all the pissed up chavs piled in around 12 and pushed their way past the true fans to the front and started jumping on the stage. We paid good money to see a band on stage, not Joe 90 look alike pissed wankers! He was lucky he did not get a kicking. Where were security? Probably chatting up birds at the door. Many people felt let down after the gig so i thought i would voice my opinion for them. Please sort the out the sound and the engineer or as a venue the Late and Live will become more of a last resort and just another late night crap disco. Do we want another venue going down the tubes? It's your choice, cos' at the moment it's a sinking ship!
- Tattie

have u actualy seen the band then jc??, or just looked at the link??? i dont even like gnr personaly, but as the guy who has to pay them i wouldnt be putting them on again if they hadnt covered the costs last time! as paul says, our audience seems to like them. maybe the live experience shows them in a better light than this phone recording. if u would like the opportunity to experience this... i would be more than happy to give you two free tickets to watch them at the club to hopefully impress you more. now i cant be fairer than that can i??

GUNS 2 ROSESPosted Thursday, July 17th, 2008
JC, of course you have a right to your opinion sir, and furthermore free speech is what this great nation was founded upon. However in my defence i would have to say that this is the second time they will have played here, and the first time they went down extremely well, and pulled quite a few people in to boot. I am not going to say i am an expert on guns and roses music particularly, but the public seem to like them, and as such i am satisfied that they are good enough to play here. The ticket price is naturally reflected in the fee bands charge, and the last time i looked, a tenner isnt exactly a lot of money anyway, relative to other things. I notice you didnt put your full name by the way...any reason for that? Lastly,i as you were speaking of tests, i suggest you take a spelling one, since you have made several glaring errors on your post. On my desk tomorrow morning please!
- Paul Hills

Whats wrong with \"FREE\" speach? check this link out, (copy & paste) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zniooajkyQ They are totally appauling & should leave the \"REAL\" GNR alone instead of taking the piss! They are a karaoke band to say the least & @ a tenner a ticket, well, if you want to throw your money away,... get a sanity test, & while your @ it,... a hearing test!!!
- J.C.

know any good folk bands??Posted Monday, July 07th, 2008
Hello, as a frequent drinker in the Thomas Tripp when we escaping the bad weather when staying down at Mudeford Beach, I was wondering if you could help me out. I am getting married next April and want a couple of folky musicians to play background music. Unfortunately space is limited to 1 or 2 people playing and am trying to do a little research into local folk bands. As we are not local - out of season anyway - i would really appriciate any help you could give us on any ideas. Thank you for you time and see you soon. Keep up the good work!!

Big thanks to funkydory for a magnificent set last saturday. Hope you all enjoyed the festival despite the awful weather. Its a pity the echo chose not to mention the festival all last week in the ents page, but there ya go, c"est la vie. heard it was a very descent turnout anyway. Lets hope the weather is kinder next weekend when the club has the wonderful "creedence recycled", supported by poor boy shuffle.A bit of summery americana is just what we need!!Neddless to say, the music is back to normal, beginning at 9pm,doors 8. cheers

FUNKYDORY SATPosted Friday, July 04th, 2008
Just a reminder to all those coming to the tripp live tomorrow to see funkydory, that the band will be onstage 11-12-30. This is of course in order to accommodate all those going to the xchurch festival(and why wouldnt you?)which finishes around 10pm. This is a fairly new band, having just released their first album, but the pedigree is certainly there..funky blues indeed, luvely jubbly!

A Black Sabbath For The Bishop.Posted Monday, June 30th, 2008
Sack Sabbath’s gig at the Tripp last Saturday was my first involvement in booking bands and I was very pleased to be Justin’s wingman for this event. As I had initially found the band and recommended them, I was keeping my fingers crossed that they would be as good as their reputation led me to believe. As it happened, they exceeded those expectations and turned out to be one of the best tribute bands I have ever seen. I saw Black Sabbath back in 1972 on the Master of Reality tour, but I enjoyed this performance every bit as much. There was a lot of fun being had on stage and “Ozzy” had me laughing out loud on any number of occasions. Tremendous musicianship and a very appreciative, knowledgeable audience made for a fantastic evening. I had a chat with the lead singer after the bands sound-check and he told me the sign of a good gig is when the audience join in with War Pigs…which they did very vocally at the Tripp! It was also great to hear songs like Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Snowblind and of course, Iron Man. Paranoid, as you’d expect, brought the house down…my ears have only just stopped ringing! Hopefully, this will be the first of many collaborations between Big Just and The Bishop, so I’m looking forward to more evenings like this. Sack Sabbath had a great time as well, so expect them back before too long!
- The Bishop.

re: gutter ratsPosted Sunday, June 29th, 2008
As a judge at this event, I just thought I’d comment on this post. “Fantastic battle of the bands tonight, had a great time. But im a bit miffed on the voting, as the band who seemed to have recieved the biggest over all reaction only came FOURTH!!! There response was the best given all evening with perhaps the only call for an enchore out of all the bands playing!! Audience reactions afterwards seemed bemused and confused. we understand the point of scoring from catagories, but when a band obviously win the folks over more than anyone else on the bill, then surely injustice has been done! - charlotte” I’ve seen The Gutter Rats a few times at the Tripp now and I thought last Thursday, give or take the odd howler., was the best I had seen them play. Sure, they had a good audience reaction, but, as you say, that wasn’t the only criteria. Personally, I thought the first band on were far and away the best band on the night and I was very surprised that they didn’t win. I placed The Gutter Rats third and the band who won, second. But there were four judges voting independently, so the band who ended up with the most points won…and surely that’s got to be fair?
- The Bishop.

Heavenly 'Jazz'Posted Thursday, May 29th, 2008
Back in town for the evening (a one-night-only foray, sadly) I was fabulously lucky to find my evening at the Thomas Tripp coinciding with a most delightful young singer/pianist - Jazz - whose voice was simply 'gawjus' and heart-stopping with immense power, feeling, emotion and vulnerability. Her piano playing appeared simple and methodic but every key was struck with delicate and precise timing and this amplified her femininity and vulnerability to perfection. I feel I must point out that I am in no way related to Jazz, am not her agent, and the £10 she gave me to scribble this review was purely to cover my legitimate expenses (and no, I'm not an MP either!) If anyone has an itinerary of her forthcoming gigs I'd be grateful to hear. Ta muchly. Paul

real soul saturdayPosted Wednesday, May 21st, 2008
Anyone unsure of whether to come down this sat to see ola onabule please consider the following: 1) he is the greatest soul singer we have produced in 25 years, leaving so called other soul singers in the shade. 2. HE WAS THE ONLY ACT TO BE BOOKED TO PLAY THE BECKHAM WEDDING.. 3)he has appeared on more commercials than you have had hot dinners. 4)he was asked to front the courtney pine band on his last tour. 5 he has played in the hyde park jubilee celebrations in front of her majesty the queen no less! 6. birds go weak at the knees when he performs!! 7 he will be supported by terrific local funk outfit the goodfoot. 8.he has 6 albums out, all of them wonderful, none in the shops of course, so it will be your chance to buy one!! 9. if that isnt 8 quids woth(less for members) then i dont know what is. 10. anyone still not coming please hang your heads in shame. thanks..

Passing of Paul HartPosted Thursday, May 15th, 2008
Sadly, paul hart, the founder of the barrelhouse blues club in sturnminster newton, died last week of a heart attack. Anyone who knew paul will know what a great guy he was, and a very talented singer, guitarist and sculptor, who tirelessly peddled the blues to both fans, and the uninitiated over decades. He will be sadly missed by the blues community both locally and nationally.

To try to clarify for the perplexed among you/us. basically we are closed on mondays, there is a jazz night on the 2cd tues of the month, local/indie/studenty bands weds,1st thurs is comedy,2cd thurs blues, fri is local bands free to 10-30,except the 3rd one which is funk. sat is national, international and occasionally local bands of varying descriptions, sun is either jazz(the girl not the music)or whatever else happens to be booked. Think i have that all right, hope thats much clearer for you now folks.

Nice one Paul-I missed the Foo's tribute @ OFS last year so shall look forward to that one.I reckon if you booked the Jamm you'd get a decent turnout, they usually sell out when they play Kyps & Limehouse Lizzy are prety special whatever your musical preference. On the 'Indie' front Oxford's 9 Stone Cowboy are up & coming while Bristol's Undercut are making a name for themselves currently.Locally can I request Rushing With Apathy,Butcher Blues Foundation(now London),A&E Line,Peeping Toms,Ethel & Southampton's finest Stout.Dont want much do I !!! Can I put myself forward for that 60's DJ slot,I have DJ'd locally these past 5years including Room101 & Longs in Lymington.BigRoss40.

Well said si, quite succinctly put i think..will be booking the band back again in the summer, seeking a date right now. meanwhile for those who love 60s music of one stripe or another, come and see the get up on the 26th, together with soul baby. that will be a great austin powers meets motown evening. also pleased to announce the gene drayton unit back on the 22cd march, and the first gig from the small fakers tribute band on april 12th, and the club debut of the bog rolling stones and nelsons column on the 26th. Its hard work dj ing 60s stuff, as the tunes change every 2 minutes, but if anyone might be up for an occasional 3 hour 60s disco session in midweek, let us know and will be pleased to oblige.

New Years EvePosted Saturday, January 05th, 2008
Great Band and DJ the only things that marred the night were a 45 min wait to be served at the bar where an understandably stressed girl was quite rude when i asked to be served in front of people who had just come to the bar. That said i was served finaly by a lovely girl wish i knew her name who appologised for the delay (good customer service) and she told me she was not even working there just drafted in. The other thing was the advertised buffett Hmmmmm lot of disapointed people looking at empty plates. Just a tip if you cant deliver the promise dont make it in the first place.

Those folks who are still dithering about what to do on the 31st should really think about getting their tickets for our party now before they all go...we really wouldnt want to dissapoint any of you now would we..if anyone is stuck re the fancy dress angle, well, think mod, think hippy, mini skirts satin shirts, chelsea boots, military uniforms, batman, there"s a lot of "looks" within that era, thats what the internet is for, for those of you too young to remember!! we will be playing other 60s music for a large chunk of the evening(motown, soul, ska, beat groups,r n roll, etc etc)and of course we are open until very late!!(well at least till 11-55 anyway!!!)
- Paul Hills

DINO BAPTISTEPosted Tuesday, December 11th, 2007
Just a word re dino and the band he is bringing on the 22cd dec. Bassist roger innis has played with sherman robertson and mick taylor among many others. Drummer darby todd is still very young but has already played with gary moore and is a member of the incredible protect the beat who played here earlier this year, along with derek nash, our jazz guest this evening. Dino himself is just an incredibly talented pianist in the boogie, blues,r n roll and funk style, so you can expect a really lively, fun and musically rewarding evening, from a genuine supergroup!! honest guv!!

skinny mollyPosted Wednesday, October 24th, 2007
hi guys... just got back and have read your comments... I had a chat to the sound guy to find out what happened and as far as i can gather we had some un-wanted assistance at the sound deck by some intoxicated person... not once but on several occasions....not sure who yet but i will be looking into it...as you can imagine...with some 'person' twisting all the dials and pushing all the sliders...it made it difficult to get back to the mix as was set at the sound check... apologies for this and like i said i will be finding the person involved... the sound is usualy of a good standard and the pa man has been re-adjusting the speaker set up to provide a slightly quieter, more balanced sound...so... without further 'help' and the new speaker positions all should be good....

this week...Posted Sunday, September 09th, 2007
After a somewhat shabby turnout for the great JUICY LUCY on friday, THE ALIBI ans forst time spt act REVELATION made up for it on sat with a steaming show of rock covers from 9 through to 12. This thursday see"s the stormingly good EDDIE AND THE HOTRODS doing their rock/r n b thing with the solidly fine xcut saw in support.. cant reccommend the rods highly enough to be frank.. friday sees anotherr first time band in SUNNYSIDE UP, feat TIM HAIN,who mixes his fine bluesy guitar playing and singing with a twist of reggae! VERY ORIGINAL,ENTERTAINING AND DANCEABLE!! finally, sat we have the welcome return of exc tribute BY JOVIE, this time with the added bonus of fab local original rock originals band VOODOO VEGAS. Expect a long evening folks!!

Just a reminder of another three great bands this week. THURS, we have KRAMER, who are a dutch prog-rock band you have never heard of, but following in the footsteps of focus, golden earrring and krokus they have to be worthy of your support for a fiver. friday sees great local rock covers band permanent vacation headlining for the first time, again a fiver. sat we are proud to have THE MODS playing, all ex names(ringo, humble pie, gillan, kim wilde etc) who do great justice to the fab 60s beat music of the stones, who, kinks, yardbirds, spencer davis et al. see ya down the tripp, be there or be square!! we open at 8 and we start at 9 ish so dont be late pop pickers

Many apologies to all who came to see the Lennon tribute......

We have no ideas as to why he never arrived and are awaiting more info from our bookings man....no he's checked all the contracts it wasnt our fault!!!

My only theory is an unexpected illness or something....if so I hope all are well and we can re-schedule the event....

If not, then we will find another, more reliable, act to entertain you....

So sorry again...

Kindest regards

Simon

this weekendPosted Thursday, July 12th, 2007
Friday is a must for all you latin/jazz soul and funk lovers. SAMARA is a really good band, led by sax/flautist Steve rubie, a very old frien and owner of the 606 club in chelsea, which gives more work to top-line musos than anyone in the country! The wonderful dill katz is on bass, who was one of the first exponents of the electic jazz bass in britain. dawson miller is fab on congas, and vicky newton is the very special guest vocalst on this occasion..her work includes strike, and she has the ability to sing in convincing portugese as well..as for the drummer, well i think he is one of the very best in the country..but hey, dont take my word, come on down and see for yourselves!! Sat sees wayne hernandex, a modern brit soul singer not dissimilar to ola onabule. so if more modern soul is your thing come on down...hes not bad looking either ladies!

summer of love this weekend!!Posted Thursday, June 07th, 2007

Given that the summer of love was 40 years ago this week,(or more specifically the release of sgt pepper),what better way to celebrate that life changing period than to come along and see THE BYRDZ on saturday..!

They themselves had  a wonderful album out in 1967 called "younger than yesterday", which was one of the finest pieces of work of that whole era..

THE BYRDS of course were billed as the american beatlesand started in 1965 with dylans "mr tambourine man", quickly followed by all i really want to do, mr spaceman, turn turn,8 miles high, rock n roll star,my back pages, fifth dimension and stacks of other familiar jangly , beautifully harmonised tunes.

This is europes only BYRDS tribute band, and they will be playing the hits and the hidden gems like dolphin smile too.Prior to the band i will be spinning some great 60s pop/psychedelic classicesfrom 8, so make it a date, yes?

cheers paul hills

we dont actually physically sell tickets at the moment, so whatever price you see quoted is the one you pay on the door. However if its a really big band and likely to sell out, then you have the option to call and reserve a place, as long as you show up on the night concerned by 8-30. cheers

NEW WEDS LOCAL BAND NIGHTPosted Saturday, February 17th, 2007

Just to say we are, from April, starting a local band night on wednesdays,so that we can fit in all the very worthy bands in the neighbourhood.

The idea is to have a 2 band bill, playing an hour each, instead of squashing 4 or five together as elsewhere.

So, if you have some kind of following, and fancy a bash send me an mail to above address.

Skinny MollyPosted Tuesday, February 13th, 2007

What a fantastic night. First we has Crosscut Saw open with a great set which set the stage for Skinny Molly.

I've seen Skynyrd 10 time both in their original formats and, after the plane crash in various reformed line ups. The one line up I had not seen was Skynyrd whilst Mike Estes was part of them, but that doen't matter now as Skinny Molly made up for that.

From the opening chords of 'Workin for MCA' to the close of the encore 'Freebird' it was like watching Skynyrd all over again. Taking into account Mike Estes has had the good fortune to have played with original members of Skynyrd like Ed, Artimus, Leon, Billy and Gary as well as having been taught by the late Allen Collins how to play Freebird,  I am sure helped Skinny Molly sound pretty much like the original band of the 70's.

To meet Mike and the band afterwards was a great experience. Got all the autographs and photos I wanted.

Thanks for a great evening and keep that 49er flowing. Hope to see you for Focus and Martin Turners Wishbone Ash in March.

Steve Cork.

does anyone have any comments on the music promoted since january? for or against, positive or not?

X-Factor Style Talent ShowPosted Wednesday, January 03rd, 2007

How about having an X-Factor style talent show.

I remember a pub in Southbourne had one a few years ago, and it went down a storm. Acts would turn up on a set night each week to perform, and a winner would be chosen to go forward to a final. The act that won at the time was a group called The Highliners, and they used to drive around in a van with a skeleton surfing on the roof. I think they eventually moved to London, and someone on Eastenders had a T-Shirt with their name on it at the time.

Having it weekly might be too often for your venue, given all the other acts that appear there. So perhaps having it monthly might be a better option in order to give enough time to organise each show.

Anyway, what do you think ? Who knows, you may find your own Leona or Ray. Now, who do you think could be Christchurch’s answer to Simon Cowell…

Regards

Mark @ Burridge

GIGSPosted Sunday, December 17th, 2006

HI Folks,

Johny and Simon have very kindly allowed me to book some bands at the Tripp late and live from January.

I would just like to assure all music lovers that although you may not have heard of some, or even many of the bands i have booked/will be booking, i have a great deal of national experience in this area, and local too...3 1/2 years spent building up Mr Kyps in Parkstone for example, with over 100 acts booked there. I have also supplied acts locally for The 1812, Landmarc, gerards, smiths, gander, centre stage etc .

If you are a musician in a band, please mail me with your details. If you are a customer, please feel confident that we will provide you with the very best in rock, blues, latin, soul, funk, a few good tribs and whatever else takes our fancy.

If the weekends take off as they should, other nights may well be brought into play, and, with the imminent changes to the interior about to happen, in order that more people will have a better view etc, Christchurch can perhaps, at last, have its own dedicated music venue.

Thanks, Paul Hills
